PHILADELPHIA (May 6, 2015) – Today, the Philadelphia chapter of Americans for Democratic Action endorsed education advocate, Helen Gym, for City Council At-Large in the Democratic primary.

Nina Ahmad, Ph.D., President of Philadelphia NOW, issued the following statement on the group’s endorsement: “We are thrilled to endorse a candidate of such caliber. We look forward to having a strong woman’s voice representing our interests in City Council; someone who is smart, principled and whose experience in fighting for public education, immigrant justice and civil rights will create a better tomorrow for all Philadelphians. Helen Gym will be a much needed breath of fresh air in Council.”

Helen Gym responded to the endorsement by saying, “Throughout my career I have worked to change narratives around marginalized groups of people who have had to fight for their identity and voice, and I am honored to have the endorsement of Philadelphia NOW, an organization that works tirelessly to promote equality and justice for women and minorities.”

Philadelphia NOW is the latest in a long list of progressive endorsements, including Rep. Brian Sims, Philly for Change, Working Families Party, Action United, Neighborhood Networks, and labor organizations representing working families in the city: PFT, AFT, AFT Local 2026, CASA, BMWED-IBT, and AFSCME DC 47.

Helen Gym is a former teacher, mother of three children in Philadelphia’s public schools, and a nationally recognized community activist. Helen was honored as the 2007 Citizen of the Year, and in 2014 she was honored by President Obama as a Cesar E. Chavez Champion of Change.
