Today, Helen Gym was endorsed by the Philadelphia Inquirer.

After a week in which Helen’s campaign was endorsed by three additional labor unions (CASA-IBT, AFT Local 2026, & AFSCME DC47), two progressive city-wide organizations (Philly for Change & Liberty City Democrats), and Clean Water Action, the momentum building around Helen’s campaign continued today with The Inquirer awarding Helen top-billing in its endorsements for City Council At-Large.

Though Helen Gym is best known as a fierce advocate for Philadelphia’s public schools, she has been an effective activist on a range of issues. Gym, 47, of Logan Square, cofounded the Public School Notebook and the advocacy group Parents United for Public Education. She is appropriately impatient with the status quo and …capable of being an independent Council member in the tradition of David Cohen, Michael Nutter, and John Street.

Helen Gym is a former teacher, mother of three children in Philadelphia’s public schools, and a nationally recognized community activist. Helen was honored as the 2007 Citizen of the Year, and in 2014 she was honored by President Obama as a Cesar E. Chavez Champion of Change.
