PHILADELPHIA (March 3rd, 2015) – Helen Gym, candidate for Philadelphia City Council At-Large, was joined by two dozen Philadelphia parents, teachers, and students outside of Science Leadership Academy to react to Governor Tom Wolf’s first state budget proposal:

“Governor Wolf’s proposed budget is an historic proposal that begins to reverse years of damage done by his predecessor.  We all watched in horror four years ago when Tom Corbett cut $1 billion in funding from our schools resulting in the layoffs of thousands of teachers, counselors, school nurses, librarians and support staff.  We stood up to that slash and burn agenda by voting him out of office, and today’s new budget proposal is a direct result of what happens when we demand more of our elected officials and when we refuse disinvestment in our communities.  It is also a reminder of what is at stake in our own elections this fall. It is why I am running for City Council At-Large.  When we make our children, families and communities a top priority, our city will thrive.”

Philadelphia public school teachers and parents echoed similar praise for the Governor’s proposed budget.

Gerald Wright, a Philadelphia public school parent added “It’s reassuring to know that for the first time in a long time, there is a person in the Governor’s mansion who understands the importance of investing in our children.  That’s why we’re supporting Helen Gym–she’s been fighting for these issues for years, and we need her voice in city council.”
